La busca de Juan

About

I borrowed the title La busca de Juan from Borges' story La busca de Averroes, typically translated as Averroes' search. Lost in translation is the fact that La busca de Juan can both mean that is Juan the one looking for, and that Juan is the one being looked for. This is my reason to pick this title: I am searching for myself. 

The painting next to this text is Pintura constructiva, by Joaquín Torres-García (1931). It is at the Met. The little sign next to it reads

"(...) This rich, complex iconography attests to Torres-García’s notion that different aspects of reality co-exist within a hierarchical philosophical structure, which ascends from the instinctive or sensorial level to the realm of spirituality and emotion, ultimately reaching, at the highest level, the domain of the intellectual. Each symbol is intended to be read individually but also as part of a broader, abstract narrative that connects with the artist’s personal cosmology."

This website is a symbol, intended to be read individually but also as part of a broader, abstract narrative that connects with my personal cosmology.

Perhaps a similar way to describe it — and Torres-García's work — is to say that this website is who I am, although I am also something broader, the same way each symbol in the painting is individual and something more, the same way Dr. Jekyll is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the same way Walt Whitman contradicts himself because he contains multitudes, the same way Heraclitus never stepped twice in the same river, the same way there is no such thing as re-reading.

A note on English

The point of using a website as the format I do this is to be able to share it with people I care for. This also means writing in English, since people I care for speak, primarily, English. And the people that speak other things also speak English. Although it is true that sometimes Spanish calls me, the benefits of translating are worth it.
